Coinbase Launches UK Perpetuals, Futures and Options With 50x Leverage

Coinbase Launches UK Perpetuals, Futures and Options With 50x Leverage

Coinbase is expanding its derivatives business in the United Kingdom, rolling out perpetual contracts, dated futures and crypto options to eligible professional investors.

The cryptocurrency exchange said access will be introduced progressively over the coming weeks and months. Eligible professional clients will eventually be able to access more than 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities and foreign exchange, with perpetual contracts offering leverage of up to 50x.

The expansion follows Coinbase’s recent acquisition of a UK MiFID investment-services authorization, which opened the door for the company to offer a broader range of regulated financial products in the country.

Coinbase Brings Perpetuals, Futures and Options to UK Professionals

Coinbase’s new UK derivatives offering consists of three primary product categories: perpetuals, dated futures and crypto options.

The products are designed primarily for professional investors seeking tools for hedging, managing market exposure and implementing more sophisticated trading strategies.

The rollout is limited to customers who meet Coinbase’s eligibility requirements and qualify as professional clients. It is therefore not a general launch of leveraged derivatives for UK retail investors.

Perpetual Contracts Offer Up to 50x Leverage

The most heavily leveraged product in Coinbase’s new UK offering is its perpetual contracts.

According to Coinbase, professional investors will eventually have access to more than 170 supported assets spanning cryptocurrencies, commodities, equities and foreign exchange. The perpetual contracts have no expiration date and can be traded 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Leverage will reach as high as 50x, allowing traders to control a substantially larger position with a smaller amount of posted capital.

Coinbase said the products can be used for long and short exposure as well as strategies such as delta-neutral hedging.

However, the availability of 50x leverage also substantially increases liquidation and loss risks. Coinbase explicitly warns that capital is at risk when using its derivatives products.

Dated Futures Will Offer Up to 20x Leverage

Coinbase will also offer dated futures with fixed settlement dates.

Unlike perpetual contracts, dated futures have defined expiration and settlement dates. Coinbase says the products will not have ongoing funding rates, with cost of carry instead incorporated into the price when the contract is entered.

Leverage on the dated futures will reach up to 20x, lower than the maximum available on perpetuals.

The structure gives professional traders another instrument for managing directional exposure, hedging portfolios and implementing basis or other futures strategies.

Crypto Options Add Volatility Strategies

The third component of the launch is crypto options.

Unlike the broader perpetual and futures lineup, Coinbase’s initial options offering will be limited to cryptocurrency markets.

Eligible professional investors will be able to trade calls and puts, including both single-leg positions and multi-leg strategies such as spreads and combinations. Coinbase also plans to provide payoff diagrams and a strategy builder to help traders assess potential profit, loss and breakeven levels before entering a position.

Options can give professional investors greater flexibility than simply taking long or short positions, particularly when managing volatility or hedging existing crypto exposure.

UK Derivatives Launch Follows Coinbase’s MiFID Authorization

Coinbase’s expansion follows a significant regulatory development announced in July.

The company said it had received authorization to provide investment services in the UK under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) framework. Coinbase described the authorization as a major expansion of what it can offer British customers, including derivatives and equities.

Coinbase’s UK entity, CB Payments Ltd, states that it is authorized and regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority for investment services. Coinbase’s announcement lists FCA register number 1045733 for the investment-services authorization.

The regulatory approval provides the foundation for Coinbase to expand beyond conventional spot cryptocurrency trading in the UK.

More Than 170 Contracts Across Multiple Asset Classes

The expansion is notable because Coinbase’s UK derivatives offering extends beyond cryptocurrencies.

The company said eligible professional investors will gain access to contracts covering:

  • Cryptocurrencies
  • Commodities
  • Equities
  • Foreign exchange

That means Coinbase is positioning the UK platform as a broader multi-asset trading venue rather than limiting derivatives activity to digital assets.

The approach fits into Coinbase’s broader “Everything Exchange” strategy, which seeks to bring crypto and traditional financial products together within a single platform.

Coinbase’s UK Expansion Goes Beyond Derivatives

The derivatives launch is part of a wider expansion of Coinbase’s UK product lineup.

In early August, Coinbase announced that UK customers could trade nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks on a 24/5 basis through the same platform used for crypto and fiat holdings.

The company has also been expanding its international derivatives business to include assets beyond traditional crypto markets.

Earlier in 2026, Coinbase launched stock perpetual futures for eligible customers outside the United States, providing around-the-clock synthetic exposure to selected U.S. stocks. The company has also introduced gold and silver perpetual futures for eligible non-U.S. traders.

These developments indicate that Coinbase is increasingly competing in the broader derivatives and multi-asset trading market.

UK Professional Investors Get Access First

The new derivatives products are not immediately available to every Coinbase customer in Britain.

Coinbase says the rollout will begin progressively, with access restricted to customers who meet the applicable requirements and are classified as professional clients.

This distinction is important because the products involve substantial leverage and complex derivatives structures.

The UK has historically maintained strict restrictions around retail access to crypto derivatives. The Financial Conduct Authority banned the sale of crypto-derivatives to retail consumers in the UK in 2021, making the professional-client framework particularly relevant to Coinbase’s latest expansion.

Coinbase Strengthens Its Position in Global Crypto Derivatives

Coinbase’s UK launch comes as competition in the global crypto derivatives market continues to intensify.

The company said global crypto derivatives trading volume routinely reaches multiples of spot-market volume, highlighting the importance of derivatives for professional market participants.

Coinbase has been investing heavily in this segment, including its planned combination of Coinbase International Exchange and Deribit. Coinbase said the combined platform is intended to bring perpetuals, dated futures, options and spot markets together with deeper liquidity and a unified trading experience.

The UK rollout therefore represents another step in Coinbase’s broader effort to establish a regulated global derivatives platform.

What Coinbase’s UK Expansion Means for the Market

The introduction of more than 170 derivatives contracts could give professional UK traders greater access to regulated crypto and traditional-asset exposure from a single platform.

For Coinbase, the launch could also strengthen its position against established derivatives exchanges by combining spot markets, perpetuals, futures and options within its wider ecosystem.

At the same time, the use of leverage means the products carry significant risk. A 50x position can magnify gains but can also result in rapid losses and liquidation when markets move against a trader.

Conclusion

Coinbase is expanding its UK offering with perpetuals, dated futures and crypto options for eligible professional investors, marking a major step in the company’s push toward a broader multi-asset trading platform.

The rollout will cover more than 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities and foreign exchange, with perpetual contracts offering up to 50x leverage, while dated futures will provide leverage of up to 20x. Crypto options will add calls, puts and multi-leg strategies to the platform.

The launch follows Coinbase’s UK MiFID authorization and forms part of its wider Everything Exchange strategy. With access restricted to professional clients, the company is expanding its regulated derivatives presence while maintaining a distinction between sophisticated investors and the UK’s retail market.

As Coinbase continues adding equities, commodities, perpetuals, futures and options to its platform, its UK expansion could make the country an increasingly important market in the company’s global derivatives strategy.
