Hong Kong Plans 400-Ounce Gold Token as City Pushes to Become Global Gold Trading Hub

Hong Kong plans to launch an interbank tokenised gold project featuring a digital token representing a standard 400-troy-ounce gold bar, as the city steps up efforts to establish itself as a major global centre for gold trading, clearing and settlement.

The initiative was announced by Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, during Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, according to the South China Morning Post.

The proposed gold token will use the city’s HAU gold price ticker as its pricing reference. The project will also build on the experience gained through Project Ensemble, a tokenisation and digital currency initiative launched by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in 2024.

The announcement reflects Hong Kong’s broader strategy to connect traditional precious metals markets with digital financial infrastructure.

Hong Kong Plans Interbank Tokenised Gold Project

The planned initiative will focus on tokenising gold transactions between financial institutions, with a digital token representing a standard 400-ounce gold bar.

A 400-troy-ounce gold bar weighs approximately 12.4 kilograms and is widely associated with wholesale bullion markets. By using a standardised gold unit, Hong Kong aims to create a digital representation that can support institutional gold transactions.

The token’s pricing will reference HAU, Hong Kong’s gold price ticker introduced earlier in 2026. This provides a local benchmark for gold prices and forms part of the city’s efforts to strengthen its role in international bullion markets.

However, the announcement does not establish that the token will be available to retail investors. Details about its blockchain infrastructure, participating banks, custody arrangements, redemption procedures and launch timeline have not yet been fully disclosed.

Project Ensemble Provides the Foundation

Hong Kong’s proposed gold tokenisation initiative will build on Project Ensemble, an HKMA-led programme launched in 2024 to explore the use of tokenisation and digital money in financial markets.

Project Ensemble has focused on developing infrastructure for tokenised asset transactions and exploring how tokenised deposits can support settlement. Its broader objective is to improve the efficiency and interoperability of financial transactions involving digital representations of real-world assets.

Applying lessons from this initiative to gold could help financial institutions explore more efficient ways to transfer and settle gold-related claims.

Tokenisation can potentially improve transaction processing, record-keeping and the movement of assets between participating institutions. However, the practical benefits will depend on the project’s technical design, legal framework and connection to physical gold custody.

Hong Kong Expands Its Gold Trading Infrastructure

The proposed gold token is part of a wider programme to strengthen Hong Kong’s position in the international precious metals market.

In July 2026, the city began trial operations of a central gold clearing and settlement system under the Hong Kong Precious Metals Central Clearing Company, a wholly government-owned entity.

The system supports clearing and settlement for bilateral and over-the-counter gold transactions. It uses a central ledger to record settlement activity, gold transfers and participating banks’ balances, while connecting with designated vaults to record physical gold deposits and withdrawals.

The system also supports gold settlement on an unallocated basis, with eligible gold comprising approximately 400 fine troy-ounce bars that meet international standards.

Hong Kong has also introduced the HAU gold price ticker and outlined plans to expand gold storage capacity, develop refining capabilities, diversify gold investment products and improve connections with mainland China’s gold market.

These measures are intended to build an integrated ecosystem covering physical gold storage, trading, pricing, clearing, settlement and risk management.

Why Hong Kong Wants to Become a Global Gold Hub

Hong Kong is seeking to strengthen its position as a bridge between international financial markets and mainland China’s commodities sector.

A more developed gold ecosystem could attract bullion banks, institutional investors, traders, refiners and other financial market participants. The city’s financial infrastructure and access to mainland markets could also help it compete with established precious metals centres.

Tokenisation could add another layer to this strategy by making certain gold-related assets easier to represent and transfer digitally. For institutional participants, potential applications include improving collateral management and supporting settlement against tokenised forms of money.

The initiative also comes as the precious metals industry explores how blockchain technology could improve the use of physical bullion in financial markets.

Tokenised Gold Still Faces Legal and Market Challenges

Despite the potential benefits, tokenised gold projects must address questions about the relationship between digital tokens and physical metal.

Market participants need clarity on whether each token represents direct ownership of specific allocated gold, an entitlement to a share of pooled holdings or another contractual claim. Custody arrangements, independent verification, redemption rights and treatment in the event of insolvency are also important considerations.

In an October 29 report, Reuters said members of the London Bullion Market Association broadly supported exploring tokenised gold, particularly for improving collateral efficiency. However, they also highlighted the need for legal certainty, protection of confidence in physical gold and safeguards against fragmentation of market liquidity.

These issues will be relevant to Hong Kong’s proposed project as it moves from planning towards implementation.

What Happens Next?

The next important developments will include the project’s launch timeline, participating financial institutions, technical infrastructure and the legal rights attached to the token.

Further information about physical gold backing, custody, transferability and settlement arrangements will help determine how the initiative can be used in wholesale bullion markets.

For now, Hong Kong’s announcement signals an intention to bring tokenisation into institutional gold transactions rather than simply introduce another retail cryptocurrency.

Bottom Line

Hong Kong plans to develop an interbank gold token representing a standard 400-troy-ounce gold bar, with pricing linked to its HAU gold benchmark. The project will build on the HKMA’s Project Ensemble and form part of a broader effort to establish the city as a global gold trading and settlement hub.

While tokenisation could improve the efficiency of gold transactions and collateral management, the project’s impact will depend on its implementation, legal safeguards and connection to physical bullion infrastructure.
